Trying on New Wings

Doodle Notes

This summer, I've been trying on new wings, or more precisely, dreamed of and tested out various kinds of wings...

For some time already, I have felt like I’m in transition.

I’m at the age when perimenopause is little by little starting to happen, and my children are both adults now.

Those are huge shifts in any woman’s life. I feel this is like a metamorphosis on a bigger scale!

And I know which phase I’m in, too!

Over this summer, I’ve felt like I’m in a chrysalis, turned into mush, like caterpillars do.

I’ve been questioning everything I used to do and be, and I've been dreaming of what I could do and be in the future. I’ve had time for it and it has been sweet, although at times messy and confusing too.

That's okay!

And what eventually happens in the chrysalis?

The wings are formed!

Here's a doodle from the finding of my previous set of wings ten years ago.

My Inspiration & Delight

And look what I was drawn to do this summer in my mushed-up-state in the safety of the chrysalis: I started to crochet wings for myself!

Crocheting by elinap

First, I made these wings from cotton yarn.

As humans (compared to caterpillars) we can dream, test out, and finally are able to decide on which wings will fit our next phase in life the best.

The Strategy of No Strategy by Shao Lan

Right now, I’m working on another pair of wings, more suitable for a phoenix with the burning colors of fire.

Throughout my creative career, I’ve been fond of the metaphor of a phoenix that burns to ashes and rises again.

Maybe I’m no mush but ashes?

I’m clearly trying on my wings now—in time, we’ll see which ones will fit the next chapter of my life!

Or maybe we can have multiple wings!

This gorgeous crochet pattern is from Etsy. Yarn from lankaleipomo (Yarn Bakery), in this color (4-ply, 1600 m).
